BLACK STALLION CRASH |
|
The stunt started with the show clown rassing Mike Vaters about how he would not clear the American Dream. Then the clown put a battery powered Bigfoot by a dirt ramp saying he could do the same stunt. Mike told the clown to do it backwards, since that was how he was going to do his stunt. Well the clown just kinda drove off the ramp and over the toy. He did it backwards but didn't get any air. Mike had done a trial run on the ramp without the American Dream at an earlier show. I really didn't think he got high enough or went out far enough to clear the monster. Mike asked me and several others how it looked. We all agreed he needed more speed to pull it off. Since he was backing, he didn't have more speed so he had the track crew steepen the ramp, and steep it was. From the angle of the pictures I took, it is hard to see. The right rear tire broke off on impact with the ramp. Mike was actually in a three wheeler when he was in the air. Then landing hard on the only remaining tire, broke it off. Mike was out of the truck in no time and jumping up on the truck while the crowd went out of their minds. Mike pulled off the stunt at the end of the Saturday afternoon show, about 7:30 PM. They brought the broken truck in the pits and trashed as a crowd stood watching. To my amazement, the truck came back out for the next show starting around 8:30 PM Great job, guys. I would like to Thank the Vaters family, and the Crew of the American Dream for allowing me to use the top of their hauling rig as a photo shooting platform. You will get the double prints from the show. |

I would also like to add a special Thank You to my friend Wayne. Wayne is a photographer for the famous Watkins Glen race track in New York, about 7 miles from my place. Anyway, Wayne loaned me his "OLD" camera for the weekend. My new camera has about half the reach of his, and could have gotten 2-3 frames of the stunt. As you can see his got 19 in about 10-15 seconds. So Thanks Wayne. |
